New British banknotes bearing a portrait of King Charles III have been unveiled
The Bank of England released images of the first bank notes featuring King Charles III’s portrait on Tuesday. The new notes will be issued in the middle of 2024.
The new £5, £10, £20, and £50 polymer notes feature a portrait of the king in the security panel. They are otherwise identical to the designs that are currently in use.
Monarchs appeared on banknotes for the first time in 1960. Images of the sovereign have long appeared on coins.
On December 8, the Royal Mint issued the first coins with the king’s portrait.
In September, Charles succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. She died after 70 years on the throne.
The coins and banknotes bearing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait will remain legal tender in the United Kingdom.
