The most lucrative Monday in Warner Bros. history and the finest ever for a female filmmaker, «Barbie» brought in an additional $26 million on Monday. The domestic box office for Greta Gerwig’s bubblegum pink film increased by $26 million on Tuesday, reaching $214 million.
«Barbie» made $162 million in its first three days in domestic theaters, above opening weekend projections. In the history of film, this is the opening with the biggest opening take for a female filmmaker.
Less than 100 movies have made more than $100 million in their first weekend, and typically, those movies are superhero fare from Marvel and DC, or from well-known series like Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Jurassic Park, or feature male-driven protagonists.
Along with successful box office performances for Universal and Christopher Nolan’s «Oppenheimer,» it seems that people are simply becoming pickier about the movies they view rather than abandoning theaters altogether. The critically acclaimed pairing of «Barbenheimer» prompted viewers to watch content in large groups and on the largest screens available.
Cinema chains reported record weekend foot traffic, adding that more showing for both movies were added and concession sales increased.
