For the first time, Carlos Slim’s wealth surpasses $100 billion USD
A dozen years after being named the world’s richest person, Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim’s net worth has crossed the $100 billion threshold for the first time.
The 83-year-old tycoon is riding the «super peso,» which has seen the Mexican peso rise by almost 14% vs the US dollar this year, despite the fact that he hasn’t made many significant changes to his portfolio in recent years.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Slim has increased his wealth by over US$27 billion in 2023, including US$3 billion on Thursday. This has helped him maintain his position as the richest Latin American. He has fallen to 11th place overall in the worldwide ranking since tech founders have essentially usurped the top slots.
America Movil SAB, a telecommunications business that receives about 40% of its revenue in Mexican pesos and has exposure to the euro due to its activities in Austria, accounts for the majority of Slim’s US$101.5 billion fortune. Grupo Carso SAB, owned by Slim, is a multifaceted company that operates restaurants, shops, and builds buildings. Its shares have increased 109% this year and are outperforming the benchmark index in Mexico.
