At the age of 87, British financier Jacob Rothschild passes away

At the age of 87, British financier Jacob Rothschild, the fourth Baron Rothschild and a prominent figure in one of Europe’s most well-known banking dynasties, has away, his family declared on Monday.

The Rothschild family referred to their father as «an imposing presence in the lives of many people» in a statement provided to the British Press Association.

Born in 1936 in England, Rothschild started his career in 1963 with the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons. He then co-founded J Rothschild Assurance Group, which evolved into the wealth management firm St James’s Place, located in London.

He was involved in a number of entrepreneurial endeavors, one of which was the formation of the investment vehicle RIT Capital Partners, which has provided funding to a variety of businesses, including cleantech start-ups and hedge funds.

Along with his lengthy history of supporting the arts, Rothschild served as a trustee of the National Gallery of Britain from 1985 to 1991.

The Rothschild banking family’s history begins in Frankfurt in the eighteenth century, from which various family members dispersed to establish banking operations in other European towns.
