Following a deal impasse, TikTok starts removing content from Universal Music Publishing
After failing to come to a new license arrangement with the record label, TikTok has started deleting content from the video app, the social media company announced on Tuesday.
Additionally, TikTok has begun to muffle videos on its site that use tracks written by any songwriter affiliated with Universal Music Group (UMPG). This is because the songs were removed from UMG since the license agreement ended on January 31.
Given the legalities of the situation, the corporation is probably going to delete all of the UMPG content by the end of February, a source with knowledge of the situation told Reuters. The insider also stated that TikTok has contacted UMG and is still willing to discuss a new agreement.
The parent company of UMPG, UMG, represents a wide range of performers, including Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Jon Batiste, and boygenius.
In February 2021, the record label and TikTok came to an agreement that let users of the video app include clips from UMG’s library in their own videos.
The biggest record label in the world, UMG, said that TikTok only makes just 1% of its overall earnings.
According to TikTok, the UMG and UMPG catalogs account for 20% to 30% of the popular music repertoire, with regional variations.
