American proposes larger first class and acquires 260 new aircraft, including Boeing Max 10s
A number of Boeing’s much-delayed 737 Max 10 aircraft are among the 260 new narrow-body aircraft that American Airlines announced on Monday it is purchasing.
The purchase consists of 85 Airbus A321neo and 85 Boeing 737 Max 10 aircraft, which the company claims would allow it to upgrade on short-haul domestic and international routes. Also on order from the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline are ninety Embraer E175 aircraft.
Boeing, which is dealing with a number of manufacturing issues and new aircraft approvals that are taking years longer than anticipated, is encouraged by American’s purchase. United Airlines’ CEO, Scott Kirby, stated earlier this year that his company has been considering fleet plans without its Max 10s due to the delays.
American announced that it will also exchange orders for thirty Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, which are currently a mainstay of its fleet, for thirty bigger 737 Max 10 aircraft.
Along with announcing its first investor day in over six years on Monday, American also plans to expand its first class on select of its narrow-body aircraft. It will upgrade its older Airbus A320 and A319 aircraft, which will start operating in 2025, in order to provide more first-class seats.
As more passengers accrue credit card points and show a willingness to pay for additional space on board, airlines are facing increased demand for first class and other premium seats.
