Nissan and Honda negotiate alliance to manufacture electric vehicles
The news is made at a time when demand for electric cars is rising and several nations are moving toward decarbonization.
Automakers Nissan and Honda said on Friday that they have begun talks to create an alliance to develop parts and software for electric cars (EVs) in an effort to reduce costs and be more competitive in the expanding market.
Makoto Uchida, President and CEO of Nissan, and Toshihiro Mibe, CEO of Honda, stated during a press conference that the two firms will examine existing synergies to identify potential areas of cooperation. These areas of cooperation will include software and the standardization of important parts for joint usage in their cars, like as batteries.
The news coincides with a rising global market for electric cars as several nations move toward decarbonization.
Even though cars are now a major part of daily life, Uchida noted during the presentation that «what customers are looking for has changed significantly» and that «modern engines and software are needed to adapt to those demands.»
The automotive market, and the electrification market in particular, «is changing rapidly and competitiveness is expected to tighten. (…) I believe we can share common challenges» with Honda, said the Nissan president.
