Who is the owner of Banorte?

Both international and domestic businesses operate in Mexico’s banking sector. Banorte, a Mexican bank founded in 1899 that is currently ranked among the country’s most significant.

The bank has been run by its present owners for 32 years. It was among the properties owned by the Mexican State that were sold to the private sector in 1992 and are still in the hands of its principal stockholders.

According to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV), Banorte is a financial group that uses a universal banking model to operate and offers a wide range of products and services through its brokerage house, pension and insurance companies, Afore, investment funds, leasing and factoring companies, and warehousing company.

In addition, a variety of investors, including foreign funds and private people, make up the financial group; the Gonzalez family is by far the biggest stakeholder.

This is owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Hank González, who resumed his role as Banorte’s chairman of the board of directors in April 2023.

Carlos Hank González started in the business world in 1997 when he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Interacciones Casa de Bolsa. In 1999, he became CEO of Banco Interacciones and in 2000, CEO of Grupo Financiero Interacciones (GFI).

By 2003 he became Deputy CEO of GF Banorte and by the end of the same year he returned to the General Management of GFI to position it as a financial group with high profitability, specialized in financing to states and municipalities; he led a successful public offering in 2013, which consolidated GFI as a public company with growing liquidity in the stock market.

Likewise, in 2008 he was appointed CEO of Grupo Industrial Hermes, founded in 1978, with different lines of business in infrastructure, energy, automotive, transportation and since 2013, tourism.

The legacy of the Hank family continues to be present in the business world and its weight is imminent thanks to the fact that it comes from the kinship of a renowned Mexican politician, “El Profesor”, Carlos Hank González. He was Governor of the State of Mexico between 1969 and 1975.
