«Inside out 2» was expected to change the summer box office season, but the reality of its draw blew its $90mdd projection and broke records along the way.
The film, a sequel to the 2015 film, grossed a whopping $155 mdd in the U.S. and another $140 million overseas, making it the best opening for an animated film in similar markets, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The release was the highest grossing of the summer (a relatively mediocre summer at the box office until «Inside out 2»), the best of 2024 and the second-best domestic opening for an animated film of all time (The Incredibles 2, also from Pixar, holds the crown).
Bad Boys 4, which also exceeded expectations when it opened last weekend, came in at No. 2 with an additional gross of $33 mdd, followed by Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom ($5.2 mdd). “The Garfield Movie” ($5 mdd) and “IF” ($3.5 mdd).
