Starbucks is offering new CEO Brian Niccol $85 million in cash and shares when he left Chipotle
Brian Niccol, the new CEO and chair of Starbucks, was enticed away from his previous position as CEO of Chipotle Mexican Grill with a large one-time payout and incentives.
On September 9, Niccol formally assumes leadership of the struggling coffee company. In his capacity as CEO, he will have to turn around the company’s flagging revenues, enhance the in-store experience for customers, and decide how to handle its troubled China division. It’s a significant task, and he will receive fair compensation for it.
Starbucks revealed in a filing on Wednesday Niccol’s forthcoming compensation schedule. His salary consists mostly of equity, which vests over time and is determined by various measures and corporate performance criteria. If the business meets its goals and his compensation plan completely vests, it could be worth up to $116.8 million in his first year.
Niccol will get a base pay of $1.6 million per year in addition to the possibility of earning an additional $7.2 million in cash. Additionally, he will be qualified for yearly equity rewards of up to $23 million.
To make up for his departure from the burrito restaurant, Niccol will also earn a $10 million cash bonus and $75 million in stock as compensation for departing Chipotle. The equity will vest over a three- to four-year period contingent on Niccol’s employment and the profitability of the firm.
