ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming is already China’s richest man
Zhang Yiming, the creator of ByteDance, is China’s richest person, with a personal worth of $49.3 billion, according to an annual rich list released on Tuesday, albeit his peers in real estate and renewable energy have performed less well.
Zhang, 41, who stepped down as CEO of ByteDance in 2021, is the 18th person to be named China’s wealthiest person in the 26 years since the Hurun China Rich List was first published.
He surpassed bottled water tycoon Zhong Shanshan, who dropped to second place when his fortune decreased 24% to $47.9 billion.
Despite a legal struggle over its assets in the United States, ByteDance’s worldwide revenue increased by 30% last year to $110 billion, according to Hurun, helping to swell Zhang’s personal fortune.
