Banorte has taken significant efforts toward sustainability, with strong financial results and a variety of ESG activities. However, if it genuinely wants to be known as «the most sustainable bank in Mexico,» the task extends beyond one-time initiatives and isolated promises. Its electric car loan, for example, is a laudable effort, but it is merely the beginning of a portfolio that might be distributed more equitably to initiatives with a favorable environmental impact.

The path to sustainability leadership requires much more. Banorte must include sustainability into its fundamental business plan, broadening the reach of its financial inclusion and empowerment programs, particularly in underserved communities. In addition, it must improve its transparency and governance by guaranteeing gender balance on its Board and presenting clear and verifiable impact indicators across its activities.

A few years ago, Carlos Hank González projected Banorte onto the global stage at the United Nations, promoting a vision of leadership in sustainability. Now, it is time to back up that vision with decisive and consistent action. Sustainability can no longer be just a section in its reports, but rather the axis that drives its growth. What will be Banorte’s sustainability north? Banorte has the opportunity to demonstrate that it can lead responsibly in an ever-changing financial environment. The direction is in its hands.
