French newspapers sue X for unpaid use of their content
Several French newspapers stated on Tuesday that they had launched a lawsuit against billionaire Elon Musk’s social network X, accusing it of utilizing their material without paying them, a breach of the «neighboring rights» concept.
Copyright rights enable newspapers, periodicals, and press agencies to pay for content that is replicated on Internet platforms.
Le Figaro, Les Échos, Le Parisien, Le Monde, Télérama, Courrier International, Le Huffington Post, Malesherbes Publications, and Le Nouvel Obs filed the complaint together in a Paris court, according to a news statement.
On May 24, a judge found in favor of the media and ordered the social network to provide commercial data within two months that would allow them to assess the money generated by the platform’s content.
The social network X (ex-Twitter) «has not complied» with the ruling so far, «thus demonstrating its invariable desire to evade its legal obligations,» according to the newspapers, which justified the current legal action.
