Bose acquires McIntosh, a renowned manufacturer of high-end luxury audio equipment
Bose Corp. will buy the McIntosh Group, giving the Massachusetts-based business ownership over one of the most prestigious names in high-end audio.
McIntosh will continue to produce high-end audio equipment in its historic base in Binghamton, New York, according to Bose CEO Lila Snyder. Sonus Faber, an Italian business that handcrafts high-end speakers, is also part of the agreement.
Snyder, who took over as Bose CEO in 2020, did not disclose the details or price of the transaction. McIntosh was originally owned by Highlander Partners, a Dallas-based private equity company.
McIntosh has been producing high-end amplifiers and other audio equipment since 1949, and some of its products may cost tens of thousands of dollars. Sonus Faber sells a pair of speakers for $140,000.
The deal demonstrates how Bose is handling an environment with greater competition in headphones and audio devices than ever. Bose is privately held and does not disclose annual revenue, despite having around $3 billion in sales in 2023, according to Forbes. It has around 3,000 employees.
