Concanaco Servytur fears that a tax on cruise passengers may discourage shipping lines
The Confederación de Cámaras Nacionales de Comercio, Servicios y Turismo (Concanaco Servytur) expressed concern on Monday about the tax that cruceristas (barco tourists) must now pay after the Chamber of Deputies eliminated their exemption as part of the Federal Law of Rights for 2025.
The measure, which will also be discussed by the Senate, would impose a fee of $42 per passenger, potentially affecting cruise lines and favoring destinations in the Caribbean and Central America.
This decision threatens the economy of port communities including as Cozumel, Mahahual, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Ensenada, Puerto Chiapas, Puerto Progreso, and Cabo San Lucas, where cruise tourism accounts for up to 90% of visitors.
“Local communities are extremely concerned that they would be the most affected by the elimination of the Non-Immigrant Duty exception (DNI), particularly those whose livelihoods depend on the income generated by cruise passengers.”
