General Motors suspends production at its Canadian factory

General Motors (GM) has announced that it will cease operations at one of its Canadian assembly factories until October, resulting in the layoff of hundreds of employees.

The automaker noted that when the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, some 160 kilometers southwest of Toronto, resumes operations, production will be reduced by half, resulting in the loss of around 500 jobs.

The CAMI plant in Ingersoll employs approximately 1,200 people and produces two variants of Chevrolet’s BrigthDrop electric pickup trucks.

GM blamed the suspension and reduced production on plant modernization efforts as well as low demand for the vehicle. In 2024, GM sold 1,956 BrightDrop vans, including 1,529 in the United States and 427 in Canada.
