Trump’s decision to lower US auto tariffs

US auto tariffs

In an effort to encourage the auto industry to shift more production back to the United States, U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday authorized more relief for domestic manufacturers from his 25% vehicle and auto parts tariffs that were put into effect less than a month ago.

As he looks to negotiate agreements aimed at reducing other nations’ trade obstacles to U.S. exports, Trump’s recent orders represent the most recent easing of his multi-layered tariff assault on trading partners.

Earlier this month, Trump’s government temporarily waived triple-digit tariffs on laptops, smartphones, and other devices that are primarily manufactured in China.

Here are the contents of Trump’s most recent executive order and proclamation about auto tariffs.

Trump has mandated that the 25% tariffs he has placed on steel, aluminum, and Canadian and Mexican goods linked to the U.S. fentanyl epidemic will no longer apply to cars and auto parts that are already subject to his new Section 232 vehicles tariffs.

However, the decision stipulates that the 2.5% «Most Favored Nation» tariff rate for vehicle imports and other tariffs, such as Trump’s 145% duties on Chinese goods, will remain in effect.
