Trump delays the deadline for TikTok’s sale in the United States until September

Despite a statute requiring a sale or suspension if there is no substantial progress, U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday extended the deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell U.S. assets of the short-form video app TikTok until September 17.
As he had previously hinted, Trump issued an executive order extending the deadline by ninety days on Thursday.
In the absence of substantial progress toward a sale, the Republican president has previously twice given a reprieve from federal enforcement of a statute requiring a sale or shutdown of TikTok that was set to go into effect in January.
Trump has stated that he plans to continue using the app that helped him win over young voters in the US presidential election of 2024.
Though it’s unclear how much the matter has affected the two nations’ continuing negotiations to settle a trade dispute, he has also voiced hope that Chinese President Xi Jinping would accept an agreement that protects the app.
