Canada’s natural gas might be a viable option for Mexico to lessen its reliance on the United States

Rafael García, vice-president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (CanChamMx), informed that Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and President Claudia Sheinbaum, talked about greater cooperation on the issue of natural gas.

“Mark Kearney and Claudia Shienbaum (discussed) in Calgary (a plan to) try to reduce the 70 percent dependence on natural gas from the United States through Canada,” said the business representative.

At the fifth edition of our Coparmex 2025 International Meetings, he stated that the price per thousand BTU in the United States is the second lowest in the world, at $3.

The price of a thousand BTU is $15 in the European Union, $20 in Asia, and $1 in Canada, he continued.

«Bringing (natural gas from Canada to Mexico) costs much more, but through LNG plants it can be interesting. Right now we are talking about exporting LNG from American gas, providing an outlet for all the Permian part, providing an outlet for this gas, but also making a reconfiguration so that you can import or export depending on the market».

On June 17, 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum at the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Building on the longstanding relationship between Canada and Mexico, the leaders discussed the close economic integration that has benefited workers and businesses in both countries.

Prime Minister Carney and President Sheinbaum discussed shared G7 priorities, including economic and energy security, as well as building reliable supply chains.
