Trump threatens 100% tariffs on buyers of Russian exports if no peace deal is reached in Ukraine by Sept

On Monday, President Donald Trump warned that he would impose “secondary tariffs” on Russia’s trade partners “at about 100%” if President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a deal to end his invasion of Ukraine within 50 days.

Trump stated from the White House during a meeting with NATO’s secretary general, Mark Rutte, «We are extremely dissatisfied with them and will impose very severe tariffs. If there is no deal in 50 days, the tariffs will be around 100%—these are referred to as secondary tariffs.»

He expressed his “disappointment” with Putin, as he had expected a deal to be in place months ago.

He said that he is “disappointed” with Putin, because he thought they would have had a deal months ago.

Secondary tariffs would entail imposing levies on the countries and entities purchasing Russia’s exports.

Countries that depend on Russian fossil fuels for their energy strategies, such as China, India, Brazil, and Turkiye, could face particularly severe consequences from this.

Trump has previously threatened to impose «secondary tariffs» on Russia due to its ongoing war with Ukraine.

However, his comments on Monday intensified the threat by introducing a September deadline and highlighted his growing frustration with the Russian leader.
