The Air Transport Chamber urges a discussion between Mexico and the U.S. regarding airline restrictions

On Monday, the National Chamber of Aerotransports (Canaero) urged for a “technical and constructive dialogue” between the authorities of Mexico and the United States following the U.S. Government’s announcement of restrictions on Mexican airlines, citing alleged violations of bilateral agreements.
“The measures announced by the U.S. Government will have a significant impact on the airline industry, with potential repercussions for connectivity, trade flow, and the sector’s competitiveness between the two nations. Given this, the organization stated that it is crucial to move forward with joint solutions grounded in dialogue and collaboration.
This Saturday, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that Mexico has not adhered to a bilateral air agreement since 2022, when it mandated that cargo airlines move their operations from Mexico City International Airport (AICM) to Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), located nearly 50 kilometers away, in order to alleviate congestion at the main port.
This Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by assuring that, from her perspective, “there is no reason” for the U.S. government to impose these sanctions.
Canaero, made up of 40 members, grouping national and international airlines, cargo companies, air cabs and service providers at a national level, recognized the actions of the Mexican Government, which, it said, have responded to criteria of “safety, operational efficiency and improvement of airport infrastructure”.
