The purchasing power of the US middle class will decrease by $13 billion due to Trump’s furniture tariffs

Mercedes Abundis Sánchez, president of the Jalisco Furniture Manufacturers Association (AFAMJAL), stated that the introduction of tariffs on the furniture industry. As suggested by Donald Trump, would lead to a $13 billion reduction in American households’ purchasing power.
The businesswoman stated, “Tariffs ranging from 10 to 20 percent would increase furniture prices in that country by 6.4 to 9.5 percent. Thereby diminishing the purchasing power of American households by as much as $13 billion.”
She stated that even with tariffs, the US industry can provide up to 20 percent of domestic demand, meaning that 80 percent of consumers will rely on imports.
The business representative clarified that implementing tariffs under Section 232 would negatively affect the US furniture industry and harm those in the middle class.
“New tariffs would increase input costs, affect small businesses, and could cause U.S. companies to close,” said Abundis Sánchez. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of a 50-day investigation that will lead to the imposition of new tariffs on imported furniture, including those from Mexico.
Mordor Intelligence estimates that the furniture industry will have a market value of $9.5 billion by 2025, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 4.2 percent until 2030.
This sector has demonstrated its role as an ally for North America. It has positioned itself as a prominent global player, serving not just as a supplier but also as a market for American companies.
