In Mexico, Coca-Cola announced a gradual change to its product formulas with the goal of lowering the caloric content of their drinks by 30%. With a maximum of one year to cover all media, the measure will start with larger sizes, giving priority to family-sized editions.

The Mexican Congress recently approved an increase in the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS), which prompted the decision. The Mexican Congress

The Mexican Congress recently approved an increase in the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS), which prompted the decision. Without sacrificing its domestic product line, the company aims to adjust to the new tax structure.

The Executive Branch first suggested a uniform tax of 3.08 pesos per liter for all beverages, without making a distinction between caloric and non-caloric goods, in the 2026 Federal Expenditure Budget Project. The goal of the measure was to streamline tax collection, but it did not provide incentives for customers to choose less sugary products.

Low-calorie reformulation will cover more than 70% of the volume sold in the country. «We will work to ensure that reduced- or low-sugar versions are available across our entire soft drink portfolio, covering a variety of presentations and sizes,» the IMCC added in its statement.

Coca-Cola Mexico will simultaneously launch marketing campaigns, such as pricing differential tactics across goods, to persuade consumers to choose lower-calorie options.

Just before the Chamber of Deputies discussion, which brought together Mexico’s major beverage firms, the deal to lower the calorie content was inked.
