The tech giant revealed that it intends to spend up to $15 billion in northern Indiana to construct data center campuses in order to expand its cloud computing capacity and satisfy the rising demand for artificial intelligence.

Amazon said on Monday that the new data center project, which comes after a $11 billion investment made last year, will increase the region’s capacity by 2.4 gigawatts. Additionally, 1,100 jobs are anticipated to be created.

Since 2010, the world’s largest cloud services provider and e-commerce behemoth has made over $31.3 billion in investments in Indiana.

Despite the poor return on investment, tech giants like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta are spending billions of dollars building AI infrastructure.

A few hours prior, Amazon also revealed intentions to use its cloud division, Amazon Web Services, to invest up to $50 billion in expanding AI and supercomputing capabilities for U.S. government clients.

For the data center project, the corporation pledged to pay for current energy use as well as any future energy requirements at no extra cost to local businesses or households.
