Tesla recalls 2 million vehicles after authorities determine that Autopilot does not do enough
With an over-the-air software update, Tesla is recalling nearly 2 million vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Wednesday that Tesla is recalling over 2 million vehicles because the Autopilot feature does not do enough to prevent drivers from abusing it.
It is the outcome of the NHTSA’s two-year investigation against Tesla, which will continue to evaluate «the efficacy of Tesla’s remedies,» according to a representative for the agency.
The NHTSA investigated 956 crashes in which Autopilot was suspected of being used.
«Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety, but only when it is deployed responsibly,» an NHTSA representative stated. «Today’s action is an example of improving automated systems by prioritizing safety.»
Tesla will provide a free software upgrade to Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with all versions of Autosteer from 2012 to 2023.
The technology is included in Tesla’s basic Autopilot package, which requires drivers to maintain their hands on the steering wheel at all times so they are ready to respond.
