China’s BYD is on par in scale with Tesla

China’s BYD is on par in scale with Tesla. Is its worldwide reach comparable to its own?

A less ostentatious Chinese manufacturer of electric vehicles is rapidly catching up to the long-standing industry leader, Tesla.

According to sales data given by the businesses this week, BYD Co., situated in the southern Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen, overtook Texas-based Tesla Inc. as the top seller of electric cars in the final three months of 2023.

For the entire year 2023, Tesla remained the leader, but BYD’s sales soared because to China’s government-driven EV growth. While Chinese competitors push into Europe, Southeast Asia, and other international markets with a reasonably priced choice for drivers who want to go green, the rise of BYD and other Chinese electric car makers poses a challenge not only for Tesla but also for the world’s leading automakers.

How BYD outsold TESLA?

Tesla’s aggressive price reduction helped it surpass analyst sales projections for the October to December quarter, but BYD outperformed Tesla. Over the course of three months, the Chinese manufacturer sold 526,409 electric vehicles, surpassing Tesla’s 484,507 units.

A spike in sales of its small, inexpensive EVs, like its Seagull and Dolphin models, helped the company’s performance, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association. It remains to be seen if that rise in tiny cars can continue.

BYD claimed in a filing on Monday with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that its EV sales increased 73% year over year to about 1.6 million units in 2023. Even still, the total was less than that of Tesla, which the next day revealed that its yearly sales had increased by 38% to 1.8 million vehicles.

In contrast to Tesla, BYD produces hybrid automobiles. With sales of 3 million passenger cars in 2023, BYD significantly surpassed its American rival, even accounting for its 1.4 million hybrid vehicles.

Although China’s EV subsidies were tapered out at the beginning of this year, a vigorous pricing war amongst manufacturers, including Tesla and BYD, has kept sales high. China serves as a significant market and production hub for Tesla, a company that ships automobiles to Europe.
