Peso falls sharply at the open after Trump’s tariff threats
The peso fell dramatically on Tuesday, after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced earlier in the day that he would put 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports, citing concerns about illegal immigration.
The peso traded at 20.5175 per dollar, down 1.17% from Monday’s LSEG reference price.
«Today, the peso is affected by Donald Trump’s trade threats, regarding imposing a 25% tariff next January 20, for Mexico and Canada, as a measure to pressure governments to control migrant flows to the U.S.,» said Monex, a broker.
