Tesla introduces its ‘Model Y’ in India; Musk relaxes Trump’s tariffs

On Tuesday, Tesla introduced its Model Y in India, with a price of around $70,000—this is considerably higher than the prices in its other major markets. This increase is due to the country’s high tariffs on electric vehicle imports, which Elon Musk has criticized for a long time.
It is estimated that deliveries will start in the third quarter. The American car manufacturer is aiming at a niche market for electric vehicles in India, which makes up just 4% of total sales in the world’s third-largest automotive market.
Its main competitors will be luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, along with Kia from South Korea, rather than domestic mass-market EV manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra. On Tuesday, Tesla introduced its Model Y in India, with a price of around $70,000—this is considerably higher than the prices in its other major markets. Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday and began accepting Model Y orders on its website, marking its long-awaited entry into the market where Musk once had plans to open a factory.
For now, Tesla will import cars into a country where tariffs and related duties can exceed 100%, significantly increasing the price for consumers.
