Trump proposes renaming New Mexico «New America»
New Mexico should be called «New America,» according to President Donald Trump.
Days after he signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario, which borders the United States and Canada, «Lake America,» Trump released a photo of the state’s boundary with the new moniker.
The White House shared the image on X and posted it on its Truth Social network. It depicts the state’s shape with the word «Mexico» wiped out in red and substituted with «America.»
According to CNN, Trump has the authority to alter the names of geographical features in the Geographic Names Information System, but he lacks the constitutional authority to officially alter state names because that procedure would need to be completed within the state.
On his first day back in office in January 2025, Trump also renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America using an administrative order.
Additionally, he recently proposed renaming the Middle East’s Strait of Hormuz—through which 20% of the world’s oil flows—the Trump Strait.
