Trudeau resigns as Prime Minister of Canada
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party at a press conference after more than nine years in power.
“I intend to step down as party leader and as prime minister after the party selects its next leader through a competitive and rigorous process at the national level,” Trudeau assured. “This country deserves a real choice in the next election.”
The premier’s statements come after his popularity and trust ratings declined within the Liberal Party ranks and among the Canadian population.
Trudeau explained that, although he is a “fighter,” he concluded that he is not the “best choice” for the next election, scheduled for October, and therefore decided to step aside.
He also said that Parliament had been “paralyzed for months” while his minority government struggles to pass laws.
“It has become clear to me, with the internal battles, that I cannot be the one to carry the Liberal flag into the next election,” he said.
Trudeau also discussed his perceived accomplishments, which included «fighting climate change» and assisting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
He also expressed his desire to help Canada’s middle class and reduce poverty rates «despite the incredibly difficult times the world is going through right now.»
