After a push from Trump, Coca-Cola will introduce a version made with cane sugar from the U.S.

On Tuesday, The Coca-Cola Co. announced that it will introduce a version of its flagship beverage sweetened with American cane sugar.

This announcement follows a post by President Donald Trump on Truth Social just days earlier, in which he stated that he had “been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so.”

In its earnings release on Tuesday morning, the company stated that a version of the beverage sweetened with cane sugar would be launched later this year.

“In the U.S. this fall, as part of its continuous innovation agenda, the company intends to introduce a Trademark Coca-Cola product made with U.S. cane sugar,” its news release stated.

In the U.S. market, Coca-Cola is usually sweetened with corn syrup, whereas in some other countries, such as Mexico and several European nations, the company uses cane sugar. In the U.S., Coca-Cola that uses cane sugar is informally referred to as «Mexican Coke,» since it is frequently imported from the country’s southern neighbor.

U.S. cane sugar is primarily produced in Texas, Florida and Louisiana, according to the Agriculture Department. However, domestic production accounts for only 30% of total U.S. sugar supply. The rest comes from sugar beets or is imported.
