Walmart has added Subway meals to its express delivery service, making the sandwich chain’s products available to customers via its app as the retailer expands its e-commerce offerings in an increasingly competitive market.

Subway is the largest restaurant tenant within Walmart stores. The company announced on Thursday that it plans to expand the express delivery service for the restaurant chain. Which is already operating in some states—to approximately 1,400 stores by the end of the summer.

The initiative could mark the beginning of a broader effort.

The retail behemoth has been experimenting with drone deliveries and AI-driven technological advancements for inventory management. All while witnessing an increase in demand from affluent consumers. It is fiercely competing with Amazon for the top spot in home delivery.

The company expanded its 30-minute delivery option for groceries and other products to about 33 locations earlier this year, and it uses more than 4,600 retailers to fulfill online purchases.

Additionally, lower-income households, who have historically made up Walmart’s main consumer base, have reduced their spending as a result of the country’s growing economic inequality.

Since 2004, Subway has been present in Walmart shops. Along with a number of local businesses like Auntie Anne’s, other fast-food franchises like Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s also operate within Walmart shops.
