Trump said Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok and that he wants to see a bidding battle for the app.
Microsoft declined to respond. TikTok and ByteDance did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment outside of regular business hours.
TikTok, which has over 170 million users in the United States, was momentarily pulled offline just before a legislation went into effect on Jan. 19, compelling its Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell it on national security grounds or risk a ban.
After assuming office on January 20, Trump issued an executive order delaying the law’s effective date by 75 days. Last week, Trump stated that he was in talks with various people about purchasing TikTok and would likely make a decision on the popular app’s future in 30 days.
