Because of Trump’s tariffs, Mattel anticipates raising its prices in the United States

Mattel aims to boost the pricing of its products in the United States owing to the tariff policies of Donald Trump’s government, and will also diversify its supply chain to be less dependent on China, its chief executive, Ynon Kreiz, said CNBC on Tuesday.

These two measures to “mitigate” the effect of the tariffs are known just days after Trump removed iron to a possible recession in the country saying “maybe the children will have two dolls instead of thirty, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of dollars more than normal”.

Mattel, which makes the Barbie doll, posted Monday that its losses nearly tripled in the first quarter to $40 million and withdrew its forecast for this year citing the “volatile macroeconomic environment and the changing tariff situation in the US.”

In a statement, the firm said that the US tariffs did not affect its figures in this period but it is already taking steps to offset their impact, including raising the price of products in the US, although it expects that about half of its products will be worth “20 dollars or less” in stores.

Mattel also plans to “optimize the supply of products” with special attention to China, a country on which the US imposes tariffs of 145% in general, and in particular the company plans to reduce its imports from the Asian giant to 15% in 2026, it said in a presentation.
