Sheinbaum: Walmart confirms its planned investment in Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum declared that Walmart has confirmed its investments in the country and its desire to participate in ‘Plan Mexico’, aimed at bolstering the national industry and domestic market in response to President Donald Trump’s trade measures.

Sheinbaum convened a meeting at the National Palace with Doug McMillon, the president and CEO of the retailer, along with his team. They assured her of their commitment to continue investing in Mexico and integrating into the president’s economic plan. She shared this information in a brief message on social media, without providing further details.

«We met at the National Palace with Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart Inc. and his team. They confirm the investments they have in our country and their commitment to integrate into Plan Mexico,» the president posted on her X account, along with a photograph of the meeting.

Last week, Walmart de México y Centroamérica’s CEO Ignacio Caride resigned from his 15-month position without the company providing reasons. Sheinbaum’s message follows this event.

In late March, the government revealed that Walmart de México would invest 6 billion dollars as part of Plan Mexico. This investment was expected to create 5,500 direct jobs on top of the 200,000 already generated by the company in the country.
