Sony increases the price of PlayStation 5 consoles by $50 due to Trump tariffs

Sony announced plans to increase the prices of its PlayStation 5 game consoles due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, marking yet another price hike in the gaming industry following similar moves by Nintendo and Microsoft with their Switch and Xbox consoles, respectively.
On Wednesday, Sony announced that it would increase the recommended retail prices of PlayStation in the United States beginning Thursday, due to a “challenging economic environment.”
Each console’s cost seems to be rising by $50, with Sony stating that the PlayStation 5 will be priced at $549.99, up from its current listing of $499.99 on the website.
The price of the standard PlayStation 5 will go up from $499.99 to $549.99, the Digital Edition will increase from $449.99 to $499.99, and the Pro will rise from $699.99 to $749.99.
According to The Verge, a large portion of the production of Sony’s PlayStation 5 occurs in China. Trump’s primary target for tariffs has been China, with threats of rates reaching 145%. However, he recently prolonged a tariff truce between the US and China, maintaining the tariff on Chinese goods at 30%.
