OpenAI intends to set up a data center in India that has a minimum capacity of one gigawatt.According to a report from Bloomberg News on Monday, OpenAI (the parent company of ChatGPT) is looking for local partners to set up a data center in India with a capacity of at least one gigawatt, citing unnamed sources.
With Microsoft’s support, OpenAI has officially established itself as a legal entity in India and has started to assemble a local team. In August, the company announced its plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, thereby expanding its presence in the market that is second-largest for it in terms of users.
Constructing a large new data center could mark a significant advancement in Asia for the growth of OpenAI’s Stargate-branded artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Bloomberg reports that the precise location and schedule of the proposed project in India are still unclear, noting that CEO Sam Altman might announce the facility during his visit to the country in September.
