Apple has acquired the broadcast rights to Formula 1 in the United States through a five-year deal that will help the tech giant boost its streaming service. With one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, following the success of «F1: The Movie,» starring Brad Pitt.

The two parties did not disclose financial details of the deal on Friday. CNBC reported that it was worth $140 million annually. A figure far higher than the $90 million that Walt Disney Co.-owned ESPN paid per season for F1. Which it has broadcast since 2018.

«We are excited to deepen our partnership with Formula 1 and provide Apple TV subscribers in the United States. With exclusive access to one of the world’s most thrilling and rapidly expanding sports,» stated Eddy Cue, senior vice president of services at Apple.

The agreement states that all practice sessions, qualifying, sprint sessions, and the Grands Prix will be broadcast on Apple TV. Apple TV app will also offer free access to a few races and all-season practice sessions.

Agreement comes after the Apple-produced Formula One movie, which, according to IMDb’s Box Office Mojo, has made over $628 million globally. On December 12, the movie will have its worldwide premiere on Apple TV.

According to data from Nielsen Sports, Formula 1 gained around 90 million new followers last year, with China seeing the biggest percentage increase as the sport returned to Shanghai after the epidemic.
