Top companies and their owners in Nuevo Leon

Nuevo Leon boasts one of the most competitive states for development in Mexico. In recent months, it has stood out as an attractive option for nearshoring. And the state’s legacy also includes a number of companies that have transcended the national scene.

Several of Nuevo León’s most significant businesses are prominent participants in their respective industries. Giants in the retail, banking, construction, and commerce sectors are all 100% Mexican-owned and based in the state.

Important businesses who are placing bets on the state and the nation support these groups, providing funding and employment opportunities.

Banorte

Grupo Financiero Banorte is one of the banks with the largest asset management in the country, occupying the third position in this aspect; besides being one of the oldest and most renowned financial institutions.

Like other banks, Banorte has a wide variety of investors. But it does have one family that has historically influenced the bank’s trajectory: the Hank family. Currently, Carlos Hank González is the chairman of the institution’s board of directors, which is made up of 13 other businessmen and shareholders.

Gruma

This Monterrey-based company is the conglomerate behind Maseca, one of Mexico’s leading corn flour producers, with 18 plants throughout the country. It also manufactures tortillas under the Mission brand, which it imports to the United States and other countries around the world.

Gruma is owned by the González Moreno family, which owns 51% of the company’s shares. Their wealth is valued at US$3.476 billion, according to Forbes. The current president of the company is José Antonio González Moreno, a member of the González Moreno family.

Femsa

Femsa is one of the most important companies in Nuevo León, as it owns the Oxxo convenience store chain and the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant on the continent, among other subsidiaries.

Femsa is listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV), so its shareholding is quite diversified. However, its main owners are the Garza Lagüera family, descendants of the Garza Sada family, an iconic lineage of Nuevo León’s business culture.

Currently, one of Femsa’s most mediatic faces is Eva Gonda, the widow of the company’s former president and who was named by Bloomberg as the richest woman in Mexico. Another important figure is José Antonio Fernández Carbajal, current chairman of the company’s board.

Cemex

Cemex is identified as the largest cement company in Mexico and one of the five most important cement companies in the world. It is a historic conglomerate that maintains operations in several sectors of construction raw materials, with more than 100 years of experience.

Like Femsa, Cemex is a public company, so any investor can acquire its shares through the Mexican Stock Exchange. However, it is possible to identify the family that controls it: the Zambrano family, who are descendants of the company’s founder.

Alfa

Alfa is another organization related to the Garza Sada family, which is one of the most important companies in Nuevo León. It is an industrial conglomerate active in the food, packaging and petrochemical sectors, with operations in 25 countries.

Alfa’s business is centered on its three main subsidiaries:

Axtel. The telecommunications solutions company for organizations and governments.
