Taiwan’s imports to Mexico have increased by 233% due to the boom in artificial intelligence

According to the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), Taiwanese imports into the Mexican economy increased by 233 percent between January and May 2026 as a result of the rise in the building of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in the United States.

According to the bank headed by Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, server and hardware manufacturers with operations in Mexico for data centers bought over $35,936 million from Taiwan in the first five months of 2026. Up from the $10,767 million imported between January and May of the previous year.

Taiwan’s imports into Mexico hit an all-time high. Taiwan sold as much to Mexico in only five months as it imported in 2023 and 2024 combined.

Taiwan has already become the third-largest importer to the Mexican economy. With more than 542 Taiwanese-owned companies operating and manufacturing equipment for the artificial intelligence data centers they are building in the United States.

The rise in Taiwan’s exports to Mexico coincides with the tariff and trade war unleashed by Donald Trump when he took office as U.S. president in January 2025.

In 2025, Taiwan exported more than $46,586 million worth of goods to Mexico, compared to just $17,699 million a year earlier.

Economy integration

“For Mexico, this opens up an opportunity to strengthen existing economic integration and attract new stages of production,” he said. Noting that the largest importers are the United States, China, and Taiwan.

From 2018 to the present, Taiwanese-owned companies have invested more than 615 million dollars in expanding production lines for components used in artificial intelligence data centers being built in the United States.

In Mexico, Taiwanese companies Wiwynn, Ingrasys, PCE Technology, Pegatron, Foxconn, and Quanta Computer operate. Manufacturing semiconductors and hardware for the data centers of technology companies in the United States.

Taiwan is selling more to Mexico than the European Union, which imported more than $31 billion between January and May 2026.
