After Congo’s unexpected draw with Portugal, a bettor wins $1 million dollars

An online sports bettor who wagered $300,000 that Portugal would not win its World Cup match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Walked away with nearly $1 million when the African team pulled off an unexpected draw on Wednesday.
The prediction market platform Polymarket reported shortly before the start of the match in Houston. That a user with the handle “BreakTheBank” bet just under $300,000 that Portugal would not win the game.
The odds of the bet succeeding were 23% at the time, but it ultimately paid off when the final score was 1-1.
The bet generated a return of $1,249,918.80, with a profit of more than $957,000.
Portugal, one of the pre-tournament favorites and ranked No. 5 by FIFA, took an early lead, but the Congolese team, ranked 46th, managed to tie the game before halftime with a goal by Yoane Wissa.
According to sports sources, Congo’s performance was «highly competitive,» and Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo had a poor showing, failing to create any scoring opportunities or take any shots on goal.
