Amidst tensions with the US, Mexico boosts its exports to Canada by 20.2%
Canadian purchases are starting to be impacted by the US-Canada trade spat. Mexico is expanding more quickly, despite still lagging behind its neighbor in that sector.
According to Bank of Mexico, Mexican exports to Canada totaled $12.258 billion between January and June 2026, which is 20.2% more than the $10.2 billion recorded in 2025.
Although its exports hardly increased, the United States continued to hold a sizable lead. Sales to Canada rose by 1.9%, from $172.617 billion to $175.826 billion.
The difference is in the rate of growth, although the United States still exports more than 14 times as much to Canada as Mexico. Shipments from Mexico increased at a rate more than ten times greater than those of the US.
Although the treatment of the two USMCA partners did not provoke the same response, this action comes after more than a year of tension between Washington and Ottawa, which started with Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
Canada took a different approach, while Mexico chose to negotiate and avoid instant retribution. It levied 25% tariffs on American imports in March 2025. Steel, aluminum, tools, computers, servers, and monitors were all included in the list, but products made in Mexico were not.
Automobiles shipped to Canada
During those seven months, 247,069 light automobiles made in Mexico were shipped to Canada, accounting for 12.7% of the total. 75.9% was absorbed by the US. Although the rise of the Canadian market provides an extra outlet during a difficult year for the sector, it is still far from replacing the U.S. market.
Mexico’s gains are not entirely explained by the U.S.-Canada conflict, but tariffs strengthened the trend by raising the price of some U.S. goods and providing Mexico with a chance to boost sales in a market looking for new options.
