Volkswagen is targeting SEAT as it prepares for restructuring and expedites cost reductions through 2029

Within the Volkswagen Group, the days of the Spanish brand SEAT may be coming to an end. This Thursday’s unanimous approval by the Volkswagen Supervisory Board of the adjustment plan put out by the Board of Directors to restructure the business, boost productivity, and restore competitiveness strengthens the situation.
In their statement, Volkswagen did not confirm that SEAT would cease to exist. However, sources close to the group claim that the pre-meeting documentation considers discontinuing the Spanish brand. A move that would lessen the complexity and financial requirements of the primary group of brands.
The German economic magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported that the Board of Directors intends to gradually eliminate SEAT in the coming years and that the adjustment plan must be concluded no later than the end of 2029.
It’s not a novel possibility. Versions of the brand’s future surfaced in 2023 following remarks made by a Volkswagen executive that were seen as a hint that the firm would reevaluate its permanency. But now that it is connected to a more comprehensive restructuring process that includes capacity modifications, job cutbacks, and a review of European operations, the possibility is growing.
In the upcoming years, Volkswagen, a conglomerate that includes brands including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and SEAT/Cupra, intends to cut an additional 50,000 jobs. In the absence of a competitive production allocation for the upcoming years. The corporation also has four German plants under review: Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm.
History of SEAT
Since its founding 76 years ago, SEAT has played a crucial role in the growth of the Spanish automotive sector. After purchasing the remaining shares in the business, Volkswagen became its only stakeholder in 1990.
However, SEAT’s future does not necessarily mean that its industrial structure or all of its operations will cease to exist. One of the group’s brands is Cupra, which was developed from SEAT and is marketed by Volkswagen using a unique approach.
