Porsche prepares for a period of lower sales while betting on luxury

Porsche is reforming its operations in preparation for decreased sales volumes, the sports car maker revealed on Wednesday. Wagering that an increased emphasis on premium models will aid in recovering profit margins even with weak demand.

The car manufacturer, similar to its parent Volkswagen, is implementing a significant restructuring to tackle slow sales and elevated expenses. Detailing a recovery strategy aimed at reducing its break-even threshold to under 200,000 units, substantially lower than last year’s 279,449 total deliveries.

Porsche’s worldwide sales have dropped by almost 10% since its successful IPO in 2022, due to decreased demand in China and tariffs set by the United States affecting two crucial markets for the brand.

At a capital markets day at the company’s development center in Weissach, CEO Michael Leiters aimed to convince investors that emphasizing high-end sports cars like the 911 would steer the manufacturer back towards growth. Intending to increase selling prices for Porsche’s 10,000 most exclusive models.

«We aim to reinforce Porsche as the most sought-after sports car maker globally,» Leiters remarked. Describing a transition to the luxury sector to align the brand with companies such as Ferrari.

The CEO, who assumed his role earlier this year with a mission to reorganize the company. Mentioned that his approach would primarily emphasize reducing expenses for now.

Porsche targets a group operating margin of 15% in the long run. However, its medium-term projections indicate that it does not anticipate reaching double-digit figures for another five years.

Porsche’s profit margin dropped to 1.1% last year—a level significantly lower than the nearly 20% margins achieved when it was listed publicly four years ago under Oliver Blume’s leadership (Leiters’ predecessor and the current CEO of Volkswagen’s parent company).
