The two mainstays of the European automotive sector, Volkswagen and Stellantis, utilized this year’s Paris Motor Show to exhibit increasing assurance in their electric vehicles. Applying insights from their Chinese competitors and allies who are presently reshaping the domestic market.

Both companies are implementing strategic restructuring to address growing competition from Chinese competitors in the European market. However, Stellantis’s announcements also indicated greater opportunities for partnership.

The Franco-Italian automotive group, featuring brands like Citroën, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat in Europe, is leveraging its partnerships with Leapmotor and Dongfeng to assess the technological competitive edge of Chinese firms, stated Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa to journalists.

«I don’t fully agree that we are missing essential skills, but there are definitely aspects where we can support one another,» Filosa stated.

“Collaborating and merging our engineering teams to comprehend ways to enhance our processes allows us to pinpoint the root of that competitiveness and gain insights from it.”

Stellantis also presented a series of prototypes in Paris as part of Filosa’s initiative to renew its range of models. However, Felipe Muñoz of Car Industry Analysis noted that the manufacturer remains under pressure to catch up with Chinese competitors in a rapidly evolving market. «They don’t need prototypes. They need production. Now, not two years from now.»
