Trump is preparing new tariffs for some pharmaceutical companies
According to individuals familiar with the plan, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that the Trump administration intends to declare as early as Thursday that it will slap tariffs on pharmaceutical companies that have not made deals to ensure cheap prices in the United States.
A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by the White House.
Due to the Trump administration’s consideration of a 100% tariff on imported patented and brand-name medications, pharmaceutical companies around the world have increased manufacturing and stockpiling in the United States.
Pricing agreements and commitments to the new TrumpRx.gov platform have allowed Pfizer and AstraZeneca to obtain multi-year tariff exemptions.
To avoid sanctions and grow their businesses in the United States, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, and Merck have committed to investing billions.
100% tariffs will be imposed on businesses who do not have agreements in place and are not engaging with the government, according to sources.
