As the confrontation with Iran drives up the cost of airplane fuel, Delta increases checked luggage rates

Delta will increase checked luggage fees this week in an attempt to counteract the increase in jet fuel costs brought on by the US war in Iran.
Delta will raise the cost of the first and second checked baggage by $10, making them $45 and $55, respectively.
Additionally, the airline intends to raise the cost of the third checked bag by $50, so passengers who check three bags would pay $200.
In a statement provided to Forbes on Tuesday, Delta spokesperson Chelsea Wollerson stated that the increased rates «reflect the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics.»
Tickets purchased on Wednesday will be subject to the price hikes.
The war in Iran has caused jet fuel costs to soar in recent weeks. Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway dividing it from the Arabian Peninsula, when the United States and Israel began an airstrike campaign on February 28.
The International Energy Agency estimates that 20 million barrels per day, or about 25% of the world’s seaborne oil, flowed through this strait in 2025.
