Amercia Móvil Considers Collaborating with Starlink to Provide Satellite Services

América Móvil is holding discussions with Starlink to explore services and business verticals that it could integrate into its operations using D2D (direct-to-device) technology. Which is expected to be more fully developed by around 2027.
“We are talking with them (Starlink) because we are open to doing anything with the company that makes sense for us. I believe that (D2D) will be a valuable technology and a service that complements our own,” acknowledged Daniel Hajj, the company’s CEO.
These discussions between América Móvil and Starlink are taking place despite tensions stemming from remarks made by Elon Musk. Regarding Carlos Slim and the origins of his fortune.
The accusations resulted in diminished interest on the part of América Móvil in collaborating with Starlink. To resell its satellite services—a possibility that had been under consideration since 2024. However, the development of D2D technology altered the landscape.
The value of D2D lies in its capacity to reduce coverage gaps—one of the major headaches facing traditional telecommunications.
This service enables conventional mobile phones, as well as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, to connect directly to low-orbit satellites. Thereby making it possible to send messages, download data, and even make calls in areas lacking terrestrial coverage—such as deserts, oceans, mountains, or national parks.
This technology has started to be introduced in a number of foreign markets during the last two years, including the US, Australia, Japan, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and even Mexico.
Starlink has stepped up its consumer-focused D2D testing since last year. The corporation now has 11,000 satellites in operation, and this year it intends to launch an additional 7,500 satellites for this purpose. Partnerships with operators like T-Mobile in the US and Entel in Chile and Peru are part of its expansion strategy.
