American Media Organizations Request Court Sanctions for Copyright Violations at OpenAI

OpenAI

In the midst of a protracted legal battle over ChatGPT’s purported exploitation of news items. A collection of American media publishers requested a federal court on Thursday to impose «severe penalties» on OpenAI.

The California-based computer company is accused by the media publications, including The New York Times and the Daily journalistic, of hiding and destroying documentation demonstrating how ChatGPT was trained using stolen journalistic information.

It is believed that OpenAI’s artificial intelligence incorporated news articles into its user responses.

The 52-page complaint was submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York as part of a lawsuit against OpenAI and other tech firms for allegedly «extracting millions» of copyrighted news stories to train its chatbots without permission or payment.

According to the motion, OpenAI violated earlier court orders by deleting billions of ChatGPT responses. In relation to the 2024 lawsuit, the business has said that the erased data cannot be recovered or restored.

The plaintiffs stated in the application that «the imposition of severe sanctions is particularly appropriate in this case, given that OpenAI’s conduct. Including its failure to comply with the court order to preserve data—was deliberate and intentional.»
