Eli Lilly’s weight-loss pill has received FDA approval

Eli Lilly’s new GLP-1 medication for weight loss, Foundayo, has received FDA approval. After Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy was approved last year, this is the second oral weight-loss medication to hit the market.
Only a few months after the company submitted study data and requested regulatory review in 2025, the FDA authorized the new medication, according to a statement released by Lilly on Wednesday.
According to the business, foundayo is approved to treat obesity and, when used in conjunction with a diet and exercise regimen, can result in long-term weight loss.
The producers advise patients taking Wegovy to wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other prescription. Lilly emphasized the new drug as the only oral GLP-1 that may be taken without dietary restrictions.
Medicare Part D beneficiaries may be able to pay $50 per month for the medication, while insured patients may pay as little as $25 per month, according to the firm. The lowest dosages of the medication will cost patients $149 per month out of pocket.
After the announcement, Lilly’s stock price shot up, rising 4.5% by 1 p.m.
Oforglipron, a GLP-1 agonist comparable to semaglutide, the active component of Ozempic and Wegovy, is marketed under the name Foundayo. GLP-1 agonists function by imitating a hormone in the small intestine, according to the Cleveland Clinic. They can cause weight reduction by reducing appetite through their action on this hormone.
